Independent game development continues to prove profitable for small developers.

Open-world 2D extraterrestrial adventure Starbound, has sold over a million copies in its beta state, according to a tweet from the developer, Chucklefish on Twitter.  The Starbound beta was made available in mid-December, and the UK developer reportedly notched up $5.1 million in revenue from 187,733 preorders on its own site.

Starbound is currently featured on the Steam Store, and ranks highly on Steam’s top sellers chart.

“Starbound is already extremely playable and contains a vast amount of content, however we decided to release the game as a beta through early access to ensure the community gets a chance to help us shape the game. In this first stage of the beta process you may experience some bugs, crashes or compatibility issues. Updates will come thick and fast, though, as we listen to your feedback, push fixes and add new content.” Said developer, Chucklefish.
