Review: Cyberpunk Jam

The Cyberpunk Jam was a ten day long jam where developers got together and made a cyberpunk themed game based on a picture by Filipe Andrade.

(Heres is the picture!) At the end of those ten days, there were over 250 games submitted to the jam! I have gone through all of these games and have played and recorded all of the games that I can. Now, I would like to share seven games that stuck out in my head, in random order below:

High Rise Runners

There were tons of endless runner type games, that requires the player to jump from building to building, however this one is my favorite. The player controls a simple figure who is running down the side of a building. On the other side, there is another building. As the character runs, obstacles like flags or air conditioning pop up, forcing the player to jump to the other building to avoid them. At first, the speed of the player starts off slowly, a velocity counter shows at the top of the screen to help the player gauge speed. The object of the game is to stay alive as long as possible. One hit by anything means death. The graphics are simple but really nice. The background color compliments the color on the skyscrapers, which also color obstacles on the side of the buildings. These colors change every time the player dies. There is a slight particle effect to help bring depth to the game. A robotic voice tells the player about the velocity changes from time to time and the music is perfect for the game.

Maybe, the guy on the roof in Filipe Andrade’s picture was really just looking out into the street for a pizza! This colorful car racing game really peaked my interest. The game itself is pretty simple. The player controls a car, a pizza car I am assuming from the title, which is racing with a few other cars on a four laned street. Two of these lanes of cars have cars going the same way as the player, while the other lane has cars coming at them. The player must make it to checkpoints before their time runs out. There are 28 checkpoints total. As the player makes each checkpoint, it seems as if more and more cars appear in the road! This game is just really fun and really well made. The colors also just fit.

This game reminds me of the game “Papers, Please!” Basically, you are someone who works on fixing cyber hands. These hands have many, many parts. First there is the base skin (which might need changing) then different components that make the hand work and even all of the different fingers. Sometimes, you may even get hands with fingers that happen to also be weapons. How delightful. The player must look at the warranty on the hand, look at the hand’s serial number, and make chances according to what the player sees. Once he or she feels that the hand is in working order, the player can click a checkbox that gives the owner its hand back. If the hand is not correct, the player is given back the hand and a man appears on the TV to yell at you. The player also gets a simple list of what they forgot to fix or complete. This game is so well done and so challenging its insane. Well done.

This is a really short point and click adventure about a man name James’ brother. In the opening scenes James seems to have been brutally killed and tells his little brother (the player) that he must get out of this city. Upon exploring the environment, the player soon finds that they need to collect some small items and make their way out of this town. There are signs everywhere, talking about the power and danger of the Wulvz. Once the character gets out, the game is to be continued. I can not wait for the next part!

This game is really well done. The player starts off receiving a message that a political madman is going to be at the time square that day. This man is lying to his people and must be stopped. You have been elected to do this. First, the player must pick up the gun and then go to the political member and kill them. Once this is done, the music and whole mood of the game changes. Now, the player is up against many, many pods of white jacketed men who are out to get him or her. They must kill off these men, pick up more ammo and better weapons from them, and try not to kill any of the civilians around. Its a really great game.

This game, with really amazing 3D graphics, is about a player who wakes up on a roof. As he or she awakes, drugs are pushed into their neck and they are told to go deliver the rest of them. The player then finds him or her self flying down skyscrapers fast. Windows with lights on must get drugs delivered and the player cannot miss. These buildings do not continue down forever, or end at the ground. Instead they are suspended in the air, so the player must jump from building to building to deliver drugs. I really enjoyed the challenge and 3D look of this game.

This game is quite short and simple but really amazing looking. The game itself just puts the player in control of a 3D ship that is shooting at enemies that appear in front of him or her. After a little while, a boss may appear that’s a bit harder to defeat, then repeat. The look of this game however is amazing. In the distance, there is a purple moon, to either side of the player there are tons of skyscrapers. In front are weird, robotic, epic looking monsters and bullets coming towards the player. The environment is amazing.

There are many, many other games that were entered in this jam. Check them out here!
