Review: Easter Egg Jam

April 25, 2014 | By

The Easter Egg Jam was a 4 day game jam where developers had to make games with the theme ‘Easter Eggs’ in mind.

Happy (belated) Easter! This Easter, I got the honor of co-hosting an Easter Egg Jam with Ivano Palmentieri, a great friend of mine. We were able to host this jam thanks to GameJolt’s new easy to use jam system. This jam was actually their test to see how well it worked. Ivano and I picked the theme Easter Egg for this jam, since it was so close to Easter. This jam was four days long and pretty causal. There were close to 50 entries and I have played them all. Below, are a few of my personal favorites, in no specific order.

meh

Meh

Meh

Meh is a completely cruel twist on the holiday that is known for fluffy bunnies. Instead of a cuddly animal, this bunny is looking for BLOOD. The player controls a psycho rabbit who is running around at night, looking to kill the people outside. I really liked the look of this game. The bunny has a really nice green glow around it, while the people have a red glow that dims while they die. The game is pretty simple, a bunny running around hitting others, but the bunny moves fast enough to cause a bit of a challenge and stir. Overall, its a pretty decent game.

Triste

Triste

Triste

Triste is the first game I played that had hidden Easter eggs that were really well done. The game is a classic tetris game, with many twists. First off, I noticed that the area that showed the blocks that were to come next, was a lie. There are also a bunch of little sentences appearing on the other side of the screen to distract the player from playing the game. This is not all, the game also worked like one of those pong-block breaking games. Soon, a paddle showed up and a few balls were given to the player. Then, the player can begin using the balls to break layers of their tetris board. This game is really fun to play.

Easter Breakdown

Easter Breakdown

Egg Breakdown

Egg Breakdown is a game about a bunny hero who is saving Easter. A group of bunnies prepared all of the eggs for Easter day, however, an evil bunny came along and set all the eggs on fire. Now that these eggs are gone, a hero bunny has arrived, equipped with a jetpack, to help gather all the white eggs and save this holiday! The graphics for this game were super cute. The gameplay, for me, was a bit on the hard side, but was fun. At first, the bunny just needs to navigate around pillars to the white eggs, within 10 seconds. As the levels go on, in this short game, more obstacles get added. The time limit still stays the same. I really enjoyed the challenge in this game.

Easter Invsion

Easter Invasion

An Easterland Invasion

An Easterland Invasion also had really nice graphics! The player controlled an egg like ship that changes color with different weapons. There are a huge variety of weapons that can be shot out at purple aliens! This game is super cute and super cool. It has two different modes; endless, where the game goes on forever with increasing difficulty, and classic, where there are 15 levels and a final boss. I never made it to the final boss myself, but I found this colorful shooter to be one of the best games in the jam.

Omlette

Omlette

Omlette

Omelette is a simple game about thwarting Santa’s plans to get rid of all the Eggs. The player controls a boy in a bunny costume that is bouncing eggs from the roof of a building, to safety, with his head. I really liked this game because it was super simple, yet challenging. Sometimes, eggs would come off of more than one part of the roof, causing the player to have to juggle eggs and work on timing. This game would make a great android game, where screen titling is used to move the player.

Easter Geysers

Easter Geysers

Easter Geysers

Easter Geysers is a unique game where the player helps an egg travel to a paint blob by splurting water through a geyser. Yes, that is right, the player is control a water-splurting geyser. I have never played a game quite like this one. The geysers can either put up a soft stream of water to propel the egg upwards or splurt up a load of air, causing the egg to fly at an alarming speed. The player then uses this power to lead the egg up to its paint, without letting it touch spikes or break from bad falls.

Raybtt

Raybtt

Raybtt had the best graphics in the game jam, in my opinion. The game was so cute, I felt happier just playing it. This game did not have much for gameplay, just a simple bunny exploring a world all its own. There are circles along the way that speed the bunny up or make him jump faster. As the bunny moves forward on its adventure, inspiration sentences appear on the screen, which in turn made me thinks about life. This game is so pretty and will surely brighten your day.

All of the games entered in this jam were amazing and I really enjoyed hosting it! These games just happened to be ones that stuck in my mind while playing. Check out all the games and even rate your favorite ones here.
