Voxelfield, a new game under development by UK based Psycho Interactive, is billed as the worlds first, free-to-play, Mech Combat MOBA with real-time destruction, and judging by the video above, this is an accurate description of the mayhem and carnage that can be unleashed in this game.
The game is heavily inspired by the MOBA genre, with gameplay reminiscent of League of Legends, but with a more tactical twist to it due to the destruction mechanics implemented in the game. The developer is claiming that you will be able to destroy absolutely everything that you can see during the battle.
The destruction element is a major part of gameplay in Voxelfield, and depends on physics and simulating real world materials that will not only look cool, but will also heavily influence how the players will plan their battles. You will be able to use the environment strategically, perhaps hiding inside a building, waiting to ambush your opponents, but beware, this can be a perilous startegy, because your hiding place could be utterly destroyed and come crashing down on top of you. The destructive physics can also be used tactically, for example, destroying bridges, cutting your opponent off, or using structures to inflict collateral damage on your opponents, and even setting deadly traps.
The big, unique feature here is the destructibility of the environments, but how is this achieved? The environmental graphics in the game are based on Voxels (like in Minecraft), and are rendered by a proprietary, ground-up engine, created in-house by Psycho. This enables structures and buildings to be exploded and broken apart, scattering their debris across the ground.
The setting for the game is a cyberpunk-inspired future with mega corporations controlling the world, with cybernetics blurring the boundary between Human and machine. Each Mech, has a different profile of skills and weaponry, depending on the base Mech selected, and the pilot chosen to control the Mech during the battle. Each Mech type will have an array of weaponry that can be attached and upgraded, bringing a lot of variation and cutomization to the game. Because different pilots will have different skills and spcialities, players will be able to take on different roles in the game, such as supporting, defending, healing, offensive, and work together for a common objective, such as pushing a frontline and destroying an enemy base. In addition to the player controlled hardware walking around, blowing the crap out of everything, the world will be populated with an army of soldiers, minions, tanks and other military vehicles, that will fight for or against you, further adding to the total mayhem.
- Groundbreaking real-time destruction mechanics makes it the first game in the world that allows for totally destructible environments.
- First in the world voxel MOBA.
- Emphasis on tactical combat and using locations to your advantage.
- Customisable mechs with a variety a modifications.
- Everything in the game adapts to changes (AI animation, pathfinding, shadows).
- Completely free-2-play.
- Extra content and support if stretches are achieved. For example; single player campaigns, fully professionally voice acted, multiple platform support and more.
The Kickstarter has just launched, with the reasonable goal of raising 95,000UKP. The Psycho team is offering a nice array of rewards and incentives to encourage you to back the project, and help them finish the game and bring it to market. They also have a bunch of tasty sounding stretch goals, should they exceed their initial target, including Deathmatch Mode, Mac and Linux versions, a standalone map editor, sandbox gameplay, areanas, and many, many more. You can read all the details on their Kickstarter page, linked below.
Go, read, drool, and back these guys. I for one, want to play this game, and blow some shit UP!
